CFI Commends Top Republican Indiana Senator for Rejecting School Prayer Bill

Whew!  So I'm not the only Republican who's against prayer in public schools!

The Center for Inquiry (CFI) on Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, commended Indiana State Sen. David Long (R-District 16), President Pro Tempore of the Indiana Senate, for rejecting a proposal that would have allowed Christian prayer in public schools.

Earlier this month, Indiana State Sen. Dennis Kruse, (R-District 14) introduced Senate Bill 23, a measure that would permit “the governing body of a school corporation or the equivalent authority of a charter school to provide for the recitation of the Lord’s Prayer at the beginning of each school day.”
In response, Sen. Long publicly criticized SB 23 as being “a clear violation of the interpretation of the First Amendment by the Supreme Court of the United States,” and referred the bill to a committee, where it will most likely die.

CFI’s letter thanked Sen. Long for recognizing the importance of the principle of government neutrality on religion, as outlined in several Supreme Court rulings, and for protecting Indiana taxpayers from the costs of a doomed yet expensive legal battle. You can download our letter here.
